Sheet weight calculator
Weight of a full rectangular sheet or blank, without holes and without coating.
Sheet weight is thickness x width x length x density. 3 mm S235JR steel weighs 23.55 kg per m², so a 1,250 x 2,500 mm sheet weighs 73.59 kg; 3 mm stainless steel 1.4301 weighs 23.70 kg/m² and 3 mm aluminium EN AW-5754 8.01 kg/m².
- Weight of one sheet
- 73.594 kg
- Weight per m²
- 23.55 kg

CutMeter is software. Check every result before you cut or bend. The person who approves the part is responsible for its dimensions.
Formula
Weight per m² = ρ x t / 1,000. Weight of one sheet = ρ x t x w x l / 1,000,000,000. Total weight = weight of one sheet x quantity.
ρ = density in kg/m³; t = thickness in mm; w and l = width and length in mm; weights in kg.
The result is the weight of a full rectangle: no holes and no coating. For the weight of a cut part with holes, measure its DXF in CutMeter, which uses the net area.
Worked example
S235JR steel, thickness 3 mm, sheet 1,250 x 2,500 mm, quantity 1.
7,850 x 3 / 1,000 = 23.55 kg/m². 7,850 x 3 x 1,250 x 2,500 / 10⁹ = 73.594 kg.
73.594 kg per sheet, 23.55 kg per m², density 7,850 kg/m³.

Questions about sheet weight
What density is used for steel?
7,850 kg/m³ for carbon steel sheet such as S235JR, S355J2, DC01 and DX51D+Z. It is the conventional mass density: 7,850 x 9.81 / 1,000 = 77.0 kN/m³, within the 77.0-78.5 kN/m³ weight density that EN 1991-1-1 gives for steel. So 1 mm of steel weighs 7.85 kg/m².
How much does stainless steel sheet weigh?
1.4301 (304), 1.4307 (304L) and 1.4541 (321) are 7,900 kg/m³; 1.4401 (316), 1.4404 (316L) and 1.4571 (316Ti) are 8,000 kg/m³; ferritic 1.4016 (430) is 7,700 kg/m³, as tabulated by Euro Inox from EN 10088-1. So 1 mm of 304 weighs 7.90 kg/m² and 1 mm of 316L 8.00 kg/m².
How much does aluminium sheet weigh?
Each alloy has its own density in the supplier data table we use, from 2,657 kg/m³ for EN AW-5083 to 2,731 kg/m³ for EN AW-3003, so 1 mm of EN AW-5754 weighs 2.671 kg/m². Using 2,700 kg/m³ for every alloy would change the weight by up to about 1.6 %.
Are copper and brass included?
Yes: copper Cu-ETP (CW004A) at 8,930 kg/m³ and brass CuZn37 (CW508L) at 8,440 kg/m³, from the Deutsches Kupferinstitut data sheets. 1 mm of copper weighs 8.93 kg/m².
Does galvanised sheet include the zinc?
No. DX51D+Z is weighed as the steel only. Add the zinc coating: under EN 10346 the coating designation gives the minimum coating mass over both sides together, for example at least 275 g/m² for Z275.
How do I get the weight of a part with holes?
Measure its DXF in CutMeter and choose the material and thickness. Weight is computed from the net area: the outer contour minus the holes.
